The October luncheon get-together was held on Saturday, October 12th at Barney's Kitchen in Seneca, Missouri. There were 14 folks attending today. The photo report unfortunately does not show all the enthusiastic QRP'ers that were here today.

Joe, WØMQY and Jay, KØETC in the foreground discussing VFO construction. Dale WDØGKC and Larry, NØBHU are in the background. |
Ira, KD5AUX and Rex, KC5UVN looking at the Nor'easter short wave receiver kit from NorCal. |
As usual, there were many homebrew projects to pass around for show and tell. The Nor'easter short wave receiver from NorCal was here (in it's unbuilt state). This is a surface mount kit that just arrived this week. Those SMT parts are tiny!

Larry, NØBHU looking at the latest issue of SPRAT from G-QRP. |
Foy, KCØOCK getting set for a Barney's lunch. |
One topic of discussion was the "Sidekick" receiver from the Ft. Smith QRP group that should be available very soon. Most of our members are interested in building one this winter.
Carol, W5CSJ and Don, AE5K came over from Yellville, Arkansas with 7040 and 3579 kHz crystals for the group. Also, Jay KØETC managed a group purchase of 4-40 hardware to facilitate board mounting and box construction.

Russ, NØQLT from Joplin joined us for lunch for the first time today. |
A broadband amplifier built by NØBHU that works from 5 to 23 MHz. |
Larry, NØBHU brought a homebrew broadband amplifier that he built for 5 to 23 MHz. It amplifies a -4 dBm signal to +30 dBm (1 watt). The two stage amp uses four 2N2222's in a parallel push-pull configuration in the output stage.

Jay, KØETC's homebrew VFO on the right and the 20 meter heterodyne mixer is on the left. |
Two VFO's. The left one was built by Larry, NØBHU and the one on the right was constructed by Rex, KC5UVN. |
Jay KØETC has started building a 20 meter rig and brought his VFO and the heterodyne mixer. The 3 MHz VFO is built in an aluminum extruded box for excellent shielding and thermal control. The mixer board uses a 602 mixer with an 11 MHz crystal to generate the 20 meter signal.
Larry, NØBHU and Rex, KC5UVN built 3 MHz VFO's using Manhattan construction techniques. Both VFO's work fine. Thanks to Doug, KI6DS for providing the VFO kits!

Dave, WØCH's "work in progress", the first two stages of a heterodyne 40 meter transmitter. |
For those times when QRP just isn't enough, Rex KC5UVN built this Ramsey 20 watt amplifier. |
Dave, WØCH has started construction of a 40 meter transmitter to match the "Sidekick" receiver. The VFO was built for 2.1 MHz and is followed by a 602 mixer using a 4.915 MHz crystal. Two 10 cent surplus Toko coils were rewound to make the 7 MHz bandpass filter.
Rex, KC5UVN built a Ramsey 20 watt amplifier kit and packaged it in a homebrew case made from PC board stock. The 20 meter kit was modified with a bandswitch and homebrew 40 meter filter to make a very nice 2 band amplifier for when a bit more power is needed.

Rex KC5UVN on 40 meters SSB with his FT-817 portable station. |
Joe, WØMQY on 40 CW using a Sierra while Gene, NØMQ watches the action. |
After a great lunch, we adjourned to the Seneca city park for some on-the-air QRP fun. Despite a cloudy sky and advancing rain showers, we put two stations on the air.
Rex put KC5UVN on the air using a very nicely constructed ham-stick dipole on a rotatable mast. He has ham-sticks to cover both 20 and 40 meters for his portable FT-817 field station
Joe, WØMQY erected a 40 meter dipole and quickly put his Sierra station on 40 CW. Joe recently used this same station with good success from a campground at Black Mesa, in western Oklahoma.
Our next meeting will be Saturday, November 16th at Barney's Kitchen in Seneca. See you there!
